Coffee News Recap, 24 June: PRF Colombia to take place next week, several 2022 World Coffee Championships held at WOC Milan & other stories

Mon, 20 Jun

  • PRF Colombia to take place from 30 June to 1 July. The event will include the Origin Trip Experience (held from 26 to 29 June), the Café Pergamino Barista Jam competition, and the Cold Brew Championship in partnership with Toddy. PRF Colombia will take place at Plaza Mayor in Medellín and is expected to attract around 5,000 visitors.

  • New study finds caffeine consumption can influence shopping behaviour. Researchers from the University of South Florida found that when customers consumed complimentary caffeinated coffee prior to shopping, they spent around 50% more money than those who drank decaf coffee or water. Customers who drank caffeinated coffee also purchased some 30% more items than those who didn’t.

  • World of Coffee Milan hosts several 2022 World Coffee Championships. The Specialty Coffee Association’s flagship European event will take place until 25 June. WOC Milan is hosting Latte Art Championship, Coffee in Good Spirits, Cup Tasters, Coffee Roasting Championship, and Cezve/Ibrik Championship. Returning features of the event include the Best New Product and the Coffee Design Awards:
    • The 2022 Best New Product Awards winners include Kaffeeform’s Weducer Cup Refined for Coffee Accessories, Hard Beans’ Hardtank Dispenser for Commercial Cold Brew Preparation and Serving Equipment, and CoffeeZ Inc.’s Duomo The Tamper for Consumer Coffee or Tea Preparation and Serving Equipment (Non-Electrical).
    • The 2022 Coffee Design Awards winner is HasBean Coffee for its packaging designed by Ed Hughes and Fran Newman-Day.
  • Coffee chain EL&N to launch in Italian market. The first location will open in the Piazza Del Liberty in Milan in June 2022. Italy is the third European market for EL&N, which also operates locations in France and the UK, as well as the Middle East.

  • New pour over brewer brand Graycano launches in Germany. The cast aluminium brewer includes a ceramic coating and cork sleeve. In collaboration with 2022 German Brewers Cup champion Nicole Battefeld-Montgomery, Graycano is selling limited-edition yellow and blue cork sleeves to raise money for people affecting by the invasion of Ukraine.
  • Louis Dreyfus Company publishes 2021 Sustainability Report. The food ingredients and coffee trader established a Carbon Solutions platform to measure and minimise carbon emissions across its supply chains. The company also committed to eliminating all deforestation in its supply chains by 2025.

  • Fri, 10 Jun – Submissions open for 2023 Good Food Awards. The award scheme celebrates sustainably and locally-produced food and beverage products in the US – including coffee. Submissions are open until 30 June.
  • Thu, 16 Jun – Pret A Manger to open 20 new stores in United Arab Emirates. The coffee and food-to-go chain currently operates three stores in the country, including two locations at Dubai International airport. The new stores will open in partnership with franchisee Emirates Leisure Retail over the coming years.
